Neil is an American man traveling around in Europe, in Paris he meets and falls in love with Ukrainian divorced woman Marina,
who's sharing her life with 10-year old daughter Tatiana. New found lovers and Tatiana move to United States, Oklahoma,
where Neil was raised in. Neil gets a job as environmental inspector and Tatiana goes to local school. After a while couple's passion cools out and Marina finds comfort in the words of Catholic priest, Father Quintana, who is going through his own faith crisis. Tatiana doesn't make any friends at school, shows her longing for home by pushing Neil away. Soon after when problems have risen, Marina notifies Neil that her visa has expired, she and Tatiana return to France. Neil puts his mind and heart into work to ease the missing for Marina and Tatiana. He reconnects with his childhood friend Jane, they start to spend more and more time together and finally an affair begins. Though it doesn't last long in relation to Neil's unwillingness to commit to Jane, she is hurt and angry for trusting another man and they don't see each other anymore. In France, Marina leaves Tatiana to live with her former husband, who is her biological father and returns to Oklahoma to Neil. They reconnect and marry in a civil ceremony. Marina feels the need for a child since Tatiana seems to be liking at her father's place and couple make a visit to the doctor, where they discuss about removing intrauterine device in order for Marina to get
pregnant. After the doctor visit, Marina starts feeling isolated, alone again and their relationship seems to grow worse again just like before Marina went back to France. Marina's friend Anna encourages her to leave Oklahoma since it's a
dead beat place and she belongs in a place more alive. She visits her memories, where she and Neil were happy, at least she thought so. Neil and Marina's fights turn more intense and she tries to save herself by going to a motel with their
carpenter, Charlie, who she approached some days ago. When Neil and Marina visit fast restaurant's drive-through, Marina confesses the one night stand to her husband, who gets angry, violently throws her out of the car and drives away. Some moments pass by when he comes back and picks her up. Turns out Marina got pregnant in result of having intercourse with Charlie, but isn't sure who is the father. Neil learns everything about forgiveness and humility when he accompanies Father Quintana as he ministers to the poor. Though Neil is ready to forgive Marina, they still get a divorce and the last time former lovers see each other is at the airport, where Marina lets Neil know she wishes to keep his name.

Directed and written by Terrence Malick, who directed and wrote romantic drama movie Days Of Heaven in 1978.
