Louisa "Lou" Clark lives in one England's antiquated small town. Without clear sight about her life, original and imaginative 26-year old young lady changes jobs very often to help her family financially. Louisa's usual optimistic way of live gets tested when she faces a challenge at her new work place. She gets a work in local castle, where she will be caregiver and social lady to rich banker Will Traynor, who was paralyzed two years ago after being in accident. Will used to be adventerous young man, but not anymore - the accident and its effect has made him give up on life. Lou tries to get known to Will, but to Lou seems he wants to push everyone out of his life. After watching a movie together, Will starts slowly opening up to Louisa and their footing becomes better. Lou accidentally overhears a conversation between Will's parents, Camilla and Stephen Traynor how Will wants to commit assisted suicide in Switzerland, since he used to very active before the accident and it kills him inside he can't do any of these activities anymore. Lou feels bad for Will and starts to planning all kind of outside activities for Will, to make him see life is worth living, even in wheelchair. Lou's parents have planned for celebrating her birthday a dinner party. Lou doubts Will wants to take part of the celebration, though he accepts the invitation. Dinner party goes well, Lou's parents and boyfriend Patrick get to know Will better. The evening ends with bitter note for Patrick, who sees Lou and Will getting along a bit too good and thinks young people are having feelings for each other. Patrick tries to apologize to Lou for being mad about her blowing off their vacation together in Norway. When he finds a brochure of Lou's work vacation, he gets pissed off at him and assumes her girlfriend and Will have romantic feelings. Lou is afraid because of Will's sudden sickness fling they have to cancel the trip she has been planning for long, but tables get turned and they get to still go. They spend excellent time, though when Lou confesses to Will she's been growing deep feelings toward him and hopes he will give up on going to Switzerland, but she's so wrong. Will still plans to go once they go back to England and asks Louisa to go with him and support his decision. Lou is deeply offended and hurt. Once they get back, Louisa apologizes to Camille for not being able to save his son and quits the job. Lou changes her mind and decides to go to Switzerland after all, despite her mother's advice not to do it.
Based on same-named novel by Jojo Mojes, who also wrote the screenplay for the movie.
