Vicky and Cristina are two good friends, who decided to spend their summer in Barcelona. They stay with Vicky's relative Judy and her husband Mark. Vicky is bright and cautious woman, who is engaged to Doug. Cristina is exactly the opposite to Vicky, she has just gotten out of a relationship and is open to wild summer life and says yes to anything life has to offer for her. Judy takes women to art exhibition, where they notice an artist named Juan Antonio. Vicky seems to be interested in him, but doesn't act on it, though Cristina is acting flirty with him. After when Vicky and Cristina are having dinner at restaurant, Juan Antonio approaches their table and visits them to Oviedo to spend some good time. Vicky is skeptical about the offer when Cristina accepts the offer. When Vicky makes clear to Juan Antonio she has no intentions on sleeping with him, Cristina goes to his bedroom, though in relation to food poisoning their night of passion has to wait. While Cristina is stuck in bed, Vicky and Juan Antonio spend time talking, tasting good food and visiting places that are inspirational to him. In the evening after spending a day together, drinking wine, eating and listening Spanish guitar music Vicky loves very much, she had a moment of weakness and kisses Juan Antonio. The next day, Cristina was feeling much better, but Vicky was very distracted and silent, in relation to last night's events. Later Cristina brings news to Vicky about Juan Antionio's call to her, Vicky tried to be happy for her friend, though was still lost in her thought what had happened
in Oviedo. Cristina and Juan Antonio started to spend more time together, getting to know each other, which ended Cristina moving in with him. Juan Antonio and Vicky accidentally bumped into each other at the city, talked things through and said their final goodbye. Shortly after that Vicky's fiance Doug arrived to Barcelona, her thought kept far away from lovely evening with Juan Antonio and spent more time with her husband to be. On one late evening, Juan Antonio receives a call from his former lover, Maria Elena, who has just tried commit suicide and goes after her. Cristina tried to get back to sleep after Juan Antonio left, but couldn't fall back asleep, so decides to make a tea for herself. Acting around the kitchen, Juan Antonio arrives back with Maria Elena. Shortly it becomes clear Maria Elena is going stay with young couple to get back her wish for life. After some time Cristina realizes ex spouses are still in love and feels like she is in the way of their happiness, but understands situation completely when Maria Elena confesses to her that her and Juan Antonio caused much pain to each other when they were married and they were missing a link on their relationship, which now seems to be Cristina. Three grown-up people induldge a consensual sexual triangle and Cristina explores her newly found sexuality by sleeping with Maria Elena as well. As Cristina confesses her new feelings about relationships and love to Vicky and Doug, Vicky feels secretly jealous, now that she's married to Doug, she has lost a privilege to act this free as her friend does. After some times, Maria Elena was feeling happy again and Juan Antonio found inspiration and started painting again. Only Cristina felt that three way love triangle isn't giving her anything anymore and decided to break things off with two other lovers. Maria Elena took the news bad, thinking Cristina is just bored now and has been playing with both of their feelings, though Juan Antonio tries to understand Cristina's feelings. Cristina leaves to France for a few weeks to figure her feelings and thoughts through, at the same time Juan Antonio and Maria Elena's relationship turns toxic again when Cristina is not around and Maria Elena leaves as well. Vicky confesses to Judy she hasn't been able to forget spent time with Juan Antonio and Judy uses her art world connections to put Vicky and Juan Antonio together. They meet at art party and Vicky spend an afternoon with Juan Antonio. Everything goes well with them until Maria Elena arrives at his house with a gun and starts shooting in every direction, by accident Maria Elena shoots Vicky's wrist, which makes her spin out of control and she leaves. Cristina arrives back from France and meets up with Vicky, who tells her what happened with Maria Elena and Juan Antonio. Days later Vicky, Cristina and Doug travel back to United States. Vicky turns back to her mainstream life and Cristina keeps living the way she did before, she doesn't know what she wants out of life.
