Alice Evans is a 32-year old woman, who's recovering from a psychological breakdown since her boyfriend Ben tried to kill her. She has a deadline to a screenplay she has to finish writing and heads out to her friend's Victorian style house to finish her work. Her friend Rebecca doesn't agree that Alice stays in such a big house alone, but leaves her there alone, so Alice could focus. Alice discovers the house, where everything creeks, she tries to get a good night's sleep
before start her work on a screenplay. Sleep isn't so good and Alice decides to take a long bath before starting work. After getting bad news from Rebecca that Ben has gotten out of prison, Alice starts seeing and hearing weird things around the house. She finds a collection of home-made tapes of mysterious young couple Lucy and David Woods. Since she can't concerntrate, she keeps watching the videos to find her inspiration again. The tapes show Lucy and David happily living together and expecting their first baby. As the tapes progress David becomes more and more disturbed, having suspicions Lucy is cheating on him with another guy and the baby might not be his, even though Lucy swears he's the only man in her life. Alice starts feeling her connection to Lucy since Alice's boyfriend Ben also tried to kill her because he didn't believe
the baby Alice was expecting was his. Lucy and Alice both wre tried to drown in the bathrub by their boyfriends. Alice survived, but lost the baby. Alice watched the last tape, where she can see that David did kill Lucy in the bathtub and
then hanged himself. Alice gets a phone call from Ben, apologizing for everything he's done. During the phone call Alice sees a shadow in the house and is convinced Ben is inside the house with her and has tried playing tricks on her mind, though Ben notifies he's in Boston with his mother. Alice lets Rebecca find out everything she can about Lucy and David, Rebecca attests Lucy and David were report missing in 2005 by David's mother. Alice sees a tape of David being rescued from hanging suicide by his mother. She hears her name from behind the back and realizes it's David, who's been alive for this whole time. Alice escapes, she's taking a phone call to Rebecca and realizes she took the gun and she has nothing to protect herself with. David tries to drown Alice in the same bathtub he did with Lucy, but when Lucy's ghost appears, David gets heavily scared, falls down the stairs and dies immediately. Lucy saves Alice's life, letting the water down in the tub. Rebecca gets concerned about her friend and finds Alice in the bathtub. Rebecca gets her out of there and gives her the pills Alice hasn't been taking while being in the house. When Alice is calmed down, Rebecca finds a screenplay and starts reading it, she understands it's the story of dead Lucy and David. Rebecca finds a tape of herself sleeping filmed by Alice.

Jessabelle 'Jessie' Laurent is going to move to her fiance, Mark's house when they're hit by a truck, in relation to the accident Mark died and Jessie has a miscarriage. Two months later stuck in wheelchair, Jessie moves in with her estranged father, Leon in St. Francis, Lousiana. Jessie's mother died after she was born due to brain tumor. After settling in her dead mother's room, she finds a box full of her mother's things, including tapes from the time her mother was pregnant with Jessabelle. Kate is reading her tarot cards about death and warns her of presence of somebody in the house, who doesn't want her there. After seeing a tape Leon ripped apart, Jessie starts having nightmares about black haired woman and voodoo. After Leon leaves, Rosaura arrives, Jessie's caretaker, who helps her out of wheelchair to get a bath. Leon finds her in the bathroom, freaked out of her mind, lying on the floor while bath is filled with water. He calms her down and finds she has been watching Kate's tapes again, Leon takes the tapes and tries to lit them on fire, but ends up being
in fire. He breaks the window and tries to get out, but can't and Jessie can't do anything but watch her father turn into ashes. At the funeral Jessie reconnects with her old high school friend, Preston Sanders, but faints after she sees a
figure of burned man. After a night when Preston stays with Jessie, they go to local diner and catch up, she confesses the truth about the tapes and nightmares. They watch shortly one tape of Kate Jessie has already seen and advices her to not watch them anymore, to get rid of the nightmares. Jessabelle is trying to have a quiet evening on her own, but  the tapes keep haunting her, so she puts a tape in and sees how Leon and Kate are celebrating christmas. She feels happiness for a while, but only until she enters another tape, where she sees tarot cards and her mother crying, implying that her daughter is already dead. After that, television shatters into pieces. Jessie gets scared and tries to reach Preston, but a woman answers and as soon as she says her name, call is disconnected. She starts seeing a black woman figure again as she sits in front of a mirror, it shatteres and another tape appears. Preston and Jessie take a boat and head out to the bayou, they find something that freaks Jessie out - a doll and grave with her name and birthday. They head out to the bayou once more in the darkness, do some digging and find a skull. Police promises to take samples from it and test it. Jessie is scared and horrified enough for that night and spends the night with Preson and his wife, Sam. Preston and Jessie pack her things to get her set on leaving the house, but as Preston sits in the car, he sees supernatural woman figure attacks him. He ends up in the hospital and Jessie is left at the house alone again. Jessbelle tries to get in contact when the female spirit, who's in the house to help her. Sheriff calls Jessabelle at the house to share some new information about DNA results and Preston's condition. Jessie watches the last tape of Kate, where the baby is crying and Kate shoots her brains out, the television goes blank. Ghost of her mother appears and everything makes sense to Jessie now - the black baby Kate was talking about in tapes wasn't her, but Kate's other daughter, who's father wasn't Leon. Jessabel realizes Leon killed the black baby, that's why the evil spirit of black's baby is haunting in the house, claiming it's hers. Leon covered up the baby kill by adopting a baby, white baby, Jessie. Preson comes around the house and sees how Jessie is pulling the wheelchair towards water. She pushes herself into the water and stays there for some moments until Preston
jumps in the water and saves her life. Black young woman appears in the water, takes Jessabelle's hand bracelet, puts it on her hand, kisses her on the forehead and takes her human body.

Tessa Scott is a young girl, who has been diagnosed with acute lymphoblatic leukemia. Regardless four year devotion
to chemotherapy, she realizes death is on her way and makes a list of things she wants to do before she dies, some of
them are risky, but Tessa want to do them after all. Her friend Zoey is supportive and even excited for the list Tessa has made. Her parents are separated, most of the time Tessa lives with her father and little brother Cal. Her mother and father have very different views on her disease, mother is mostly joking of the situation and tries to support her while father takes everything seriously and is still sort of denial. Tessa's brother Cal is so honesty about her condition that Cal has fights with his father from time to time. One of Tessa's last wishes is to experience love, which she thinks has found in Adam, her neighbor. Adam is a shy guy, who's first priority is to take care of his sick mother since his father has passed away. Adam's company takes good effect on Tessa as they start spending more time together. Tessa and Zoey come up with a plan to rob a guy in the department store - while Zoey flirts with the guy, Tessa takes the card, but since they forgot to look and remember the code, card is no use and they give it back. The girls got caught after trying shoplifting,
Zoey stole a home pregnancy test, which suprises Tessa. Tessa and Adam do bold-faced things together, like riding with a motorbike without helmets and going for a midnight swim half naked. After Tessa has a fight with her father, she collapses and is taken to the hospital, the hard truth is revealed by the doctor - Tessa's condition has gone worse and cancer is progressing faster than they thought. Tessa won't have much time left and even the doctor advices her to do things she's always wanted. Tessa finally introduces Adam to her father, who doesn't take the news good and confesses to  Adam roughly that Tessa is going to die soon and needs extra attention he can't give it to her. Though Adam won't give up and asks her on a date next day. Just when she's beautifully dressed, her nose starts heavily bleeding and the date is ruined. Tessa and Zoey mend their friendship since Zoey didn't want to keep the baby, but she reconsidered and Tessa wants to be there for the childbirth. She asks permission from her father to let Adam stay over until the very end, he won't approve it, but young people do it anyway against father's wishes. When the doctor announces Tessa won't have much more time left and she can't find Adam, the anger and frustration hits her and she tears up her room. Her father
finds her in the room and finally gives up to his sadness, Tessa is holding him, unable to say anything. Tessa sees her family is starting getting along good, better than they ever did. On the last night, her life full of memories come flashing back, as she goes weaker by every second, all family members say goodbye to Tessa with pain and hurt.

Nancy Breyers is a defence lawyer for sociopath convict Michael Bosworth, with who she's also fallen in love with. After a fiery exchange of words in a courtroom hearing, Nancy and Michael are removed to have a private talk. Nancy sneaks a gun to Michael, who snaps a guard's neck and they both escape. Michael leaves Nancy behind and meets up with his brother Wally and their partner Albert. They change cars with Nancy's car, the one she has left for him in remote location. All three need a hiding place until Nancy can catch up with them and Michael chooses out a house with sign "for sale". The house belongs to Vietnam veteran Tim Cornell, who lives there with his wife, Nora and their two kids, 15-year old
May and 8-year old Zack. The family's relationship is off balanced since Tim had an affair with a younger woman. Police takes Nancy into custody, but won't hold her for long, hoping she will guide them to Bosworth. Michael enters the house
with Wally and Albert when Nora is alone in the house. Tim arrives shortly into the house, wearing a baseball bat on his shoulder. When he sees the intruders, Tim tries to attack them but the bat, but fails to succeed. Younger child, Zack
runs to the house, starts playing a video game when sees strange men in the house. He runs to Nora, panicked. After a while Zack is ecorded to the next door when Michael, his gang, Nancy and Tim start to have dinner. When May arrives
with his boyfriend, Tim tries to convince them to go out for dinner, but May runs in the house and realize the situation they all are in. Tim tries to attack Wally and Alber, but the situation calms down quickly. Nancy innocent act doesn't
fool FBI agent Brenda Chandler, who puts surveillance on her every move after she was freed from the police station. Zack tries to escape by climbing out the window, but the family's real estate happens to be by their house. Michael steps
out of the house, bring the real estate guy in and soon kills him to give an example to Tim and Nora. Albert starts rebelling and pulls put a gun on Michael. Michael lets Albert leave, promising to meet up with him in Mexico. As Albert leaves, Tim goes to bank to get Michael 10 000 dollars to get Michael and Wally out the house permanently. Albert tries to escape through the river, but police puts their on eye and kill him with many shots when Albert raises his gun. Agent Chandler and Nancy make a deal, she gets a gun and drives to Cornell's house. May's boyfriend Kyle comes to the house with flowers, Michael lets May go, but the others stay. Michael has got all he needs and he sends Nancy and Wally out, but the police starts shooting. Wally gets hit and they all get back to the house. Wally is starting to blood out and Tim gets his gun. Michael pulls a gun on Nora while Tim pulls a gun on Michael. He wants to shoot Nora, but then realizes the gun is empty, Nora escapes from the room, Tim is still pointing gun on Michael. Tim kicks Michael out the house, he shouts Nancy's name is shots are fired in his chest.

21-year old Annie Braddock has just graduated from Montclir State University, she has no idea what she want out of her
life yet. One day sitting in the park, she sees a young boy almost getting hit by a vehicle. Annie saves the boy and meets his mother, Mrs. X. Introducing herself as Annie, Mrs. X misheards her being a nanny and hired her as babysitter for Grayer. Annie lies to her mother, Judy that she got the job at the bank along with the apartment and moves in with the X. family. When Annie goes picking up Grayer for the first time at school and he's everything but happy to see her, he misses his old babysitter Bertie. When Annie tries to get Grayer to open the door, she meets their upstairs door neighbor. Since the contract denies Annie to have any relationships, she calls the neighbor Harvard Hottie. Annie is having a rough time with Grayer, who makes babysitting a nightmare for her. At the same time Annie tries to keep up with lie she's told her mother about the bank job and a new apartment, she always keeps connecting with her long-time friend Lynette. After Mrs. X and his colleague are caught by Annie, Mrs. and Mr. X are having a huge fight while Grayer expresses his warm feelings towards Annie. She finds out her mom has hesitations about her job, wants to show Judy Lynette's apartment. Mrs. X expesses her concern that Annie leaves Grayer's education on the background and promises to investigate. Mrs. X gets stood up by her husband and decides to take a small vacation to the spa, leaving Grayer and Annie alone in the apartment. Her being gone for a while, Grayer gets a fever and Annie turns to Lynette for help. Lynette adviced her to call Annie's mother, she does that, but is also in trouble for lying about the bank job. Judy helps Grayer's fever down, Mrs. X arrives sooner from the spa than expected. She and Judy meet briefly, she sees how Mrs. X treats Annie and leaves disappointed.
Annie joins the X's on family vacation out of town, she accidentally overhears Mrs. X talking to a friend about how she installed a nanny cam around their apartment in the city and depending what tapes show, it might be time to let Annie go her own way. After trying to call to Harvard Hottie, Annie arrives back to the beach house, where Mrs. X fires her and gives her final payment. Grayer realizes his nanny is leaving for good and he tries to stop her, but is left with tears to seeing her go. Angry about her 40 dollar salary as final payment, Annie arrives to the apartment in the city, decides to destroy the apartment and look for nanny cam. Some time later Annie meets up with Harvard Hottie, who's real
name is Hayden and he reads Mrs. X's, who's real name in Alexandra her letter, where she confesses Annie's talk on nanny cam has made her think about Grayer's value to her own life.

Slim is a young woman, who is working with her friend Ginny in a local diner. Slim receives romantic gestures from a client
named Robbie, who's busted by another customer, Mitch Haller, who maintains that Robbie had a bet for 200 dollars that he can sleep with Slim by this afternoon. Mitch defends Slim's honor and before they know, they're married and have a daughter named Gracie. Some years later when Gracie is little bit older, happy couple Mitch and Slim Hiller life and relationship isn't the same as it used to be when they started dating and living together. Mitch is working a lot and Slim spends most of the days with Gracie and being wife at home. One evening when Mitch is taking a shower and his beeper starts vibrating, Slim takes a look at the number and calls on it. For her suprise a woman voice answers and the only answer she gets from the call is that the woman's name is Darcelle and Mitch has been having an affair. She can't hold it inside and confronts him about it, Mitch is being tender, loving and asks for her forgiveness. She gives it, but after some time later Slim can't take the cheating with different women anymore. She threatens to leave him, but Mitch makes it clear he wants an open marriage and since he makes the money for the family, he's rules apply. She makes a good face in a bad game, hoping the situation will get better. She pays a visit to Mrs. Hiller, who seems to be on her son's side, Slim turns with her problem to her only friend, Ginny and they talk about relationships and men. As time goes by and Slim sees the situation isn't getting any better, she searches ways to get free of Mitch with Gracie. She even goes to the police, but won't get much help there either. One night when Mitch is sleep, Slim dresses herself up quietly, takes Gracie and heads out for the door, where Ginny and her two friends are waiting in the car. Hesitatating for some moments, Mitch grabs her back from the door, send Gracie to her room and beats up Slim badly. Ginny and her friends hear the noise and run their fastest to help her. Luck is on their side and they get out of the house with Slim and Gracie. Slim keeps on running and stays on from hotels to cheap motels since Mitch has frozen all of her accounts. Finally she and Gracie run to Seattle to her old boyfriend Joe. When FBI is knocking on Joe's door, they split fast and Slim turns to his father for money, but he laughes
out and they leave. SLim moves with Gracie to Michigan, after settling in she gets envelope from Jupiter, her father, who has been threatened by Mitch's men and sends Slim enough money to get a house. She buys a house and changes her name to Erin Ann Shleeter. Their family life seems bright after a visit from Joe. Mitch gets the information about Slim and his daughter's location very fast and confronts her in their new home. When Slim has had enough, she send Gracie to a vacation with Ginny to keep her away and she prepares herself with the help of self-defence trainer, who teaches her Krav Maga. Slim returns to Los Angeles, breaks into Mitch's new home when he's not around, hides his guns and blocks phone connections so he won't be able to call the police for help. Slim uses her newly found technique to win over Mitch physically. She succeeds and when she has an opportunity to kill him, she can't do it. After taking a call to Ginny, Mitch uses the situation to his own advantage and attacks Slim. She remembers clearly what instructor taught her, kicks Mitch in the chest and causes him to fall to his death over balcony. Police arrives some time later and they rule her actions as self-defense. With Mitch out of the picture, Slim and Gracie go to Seattle to live happy life with Joe.

Emanuel is a 17-year old young girl, who's mind and heart is filled with guilt after her mother dies giving birth to her. She is living under the same roof with her father, Dennis and his new wife. Emanuel doesn't get along with her new mother, since she is right the opposite what her mother was. Riding every day by subway train to home, she meets a guy named Claude there, by time their friendship turns into romance. Dennis's wife, Janice welcomes a new neighbor, Linda, who has just moves next door with her baby. Janice lets Emanuel know she is looking for a babysitter and she offers herself for the job. Emanuel starts her job right away, Linda leaves for some errands to run and she gives herself a house tour. Emanuel grows to be friends with Linda since she looks very much like her dead mother. Emanuel feels curious about the baby, who she's never seen, one day she sneaks into baby, Chloe's room and discovers the baby is actually the doll. Emanuel is shocked for a while and is sure of the fact that Linda is deeply disturbed woman. When Janice is making a suprise visit to Linda house while she's out running, Emanuel does everything in her power for Janice not to see the baby. On the night when Linda is supposed to go to dinner with Chloe to Emanuel's house, she sets up a date with Claude, so Dennis and Janice
wouldn't see doll Chloe. Claude and Emanuel ride with bikes near the lake where Dennis used to take her as a kid. They drink and spend good time. The next day Emanuel is obviously shocked when she sees Linda at drugstore with Chloe, talking to Arthur. In relation to Emanuel's birthday, Arthur offers himself as a babysitter that night, Linda agrees and Emanuel is nervous about it. Before birthday dinner Emanuel makes her father to read her a story about her mother's birth and death, it's a little tradition they do every year. Emanuel feels tension in her skin and bones every time someone wants to see baby Chloe, though as soon as that topic is dropped, she calms down. After the dinner Linda pays a visit to her in her  room and they talk about Emanuel's mother and how her death has an impact on her. Linda goes on a night walk with Arthur while Emanuel babysits Chloe. Things get intense when they get back and Arthur wants to peek on Chloe. Emanuel tries to stop them with all power, but fails to do it. Linda and Artur admire Chloe for a while, but when he looks at baby closer, he realizes it's a doll, not a baby. Linda looks at the doll with empty look and finally realizes it's not Chloe, solely a doll. Linda tries to get Chloe's location out of Emanuel peacefully, but then gets very angry and frustrated, during the fight between them Emanuel faints and wakes up at hospital. Police insist she must answer the questions, though her father is trying to protect her. Emanuel claims Chloe has swam away just like her mother and left her alone, a tear is falling from her face and Dennis kicks the police out. Some time later Dennis takes Emanuel home. Some time later Linda's husband visits Emanuel and her family, sharing his and his wife's story, revealing they had a child, but she died and after that the doll appeared. He tried to get Linda to a hospital, though she disappeared. Emanuel feels bad for Linda and her life destiny, asks for Claude's help to see her. Linda and Emanuel head to a cemetery after talking for a while to bury Chloe doll.

Their first year of college is over, summer is here and magical pair of pants reunite four best friends, Bridget, Lena, Tibby and Carmen again. Carmen thought all four friends would be spending their time in their home town, but is disappointed when everyone is going away again, so she decides to to go Vermont with Julia, her co-student from Yale. Director Bill declares out it's a new season in theatre and they're going to open auditions for The Winter's Tale. Bridget finds stash of letters from her grandmother Greta, a woman she thought didn't want anything to do with her. She decides to leave archaeological digs in Turkey early and visits Greta in Alabama. Lena has gone to Greece again to mourn the death of Papi. After the funeral she finds herself chatting with her lost lover Kostas, who introduces her to his new wife and mother of his first child. Lena is disappointed, hurt and packs her bags to go to Rhode Island School Of Design. Tibby is celebrating anniversary with her boyfriend Brian McBrian. They drink some wine and feel both ready for their first time. After it, Brian realizes that the condom broke since the date has been expired for years. Tibby tries to make the brave face, but is  deeply very worried about the situation. Carmen makes an on-stage accident during Ian's audition, later Ian puts her in uncomfortable situation, making her to audition in front of Bill for the role of Perdita. Not knowing how it could've happened, Carmen gets the part, leaving Julia to another role, who feels a touch of jealousy because of Carmen, though still agrees to help her for the role. Lena is worried about Tibby and rushes over to her place, only to figure out Tibby has done the pregnancy test by herself and discovers the truth - she is not pregnant. Lena has been growing closer with Leo, the model, who they all draw in class. She gets an unexpected visit from Kostos, who explains that he and his wife got the marriage annulled because of fake pregnancy. Lena accepts the truth, but doesn't want any relationship with Kostos, he is heartbroken, but accepts her choice. Carmen loses her inspiration after she finds out that Ian has feelings for Julia and they are probably going to end up together. Lena's little sister, Effie was so hurt and mad of all the girls, she took the jeans and lost them in Greece. Len travels there to find the pants, other girls arrival caughts her by suprise. Girls print out the ads for lost
pants and put them up on every wall they can. Best friends doesn't find pants, but use their few days in Greece to have the last fun they could have on this summer.

Three years later, Boston born and raised teener, Ren McCormack arrives to town after his mother died from leukemia and father abandoned him and his cousins.
On a get together at the church, Ren puts his eye on Reverend's daughter, Ariel, though she is already dating with dirt-track driver Chuck Cranston. Ariel has changed since the death of Bobby, she has started to lie to her parents about her whereabouts and city rules also. First person Ren befriends at school is Willard, who introduces him to an accident that happened years ago and how there are certain rules in the town from there on - no loud music, dancing and parties for kids. Though despite
all the rules, there is a local snack bar, where its owner allows young people to listen loud music and dancing when law enforcement isn't around. One night Willard asks Ren to come and check it out. When Ren and Ariel got to dancing with each other really close, Reverend Moore visits the snack bar and they're all busted. Ren is brought to principal's office for owning a marijuana joint, but since there's no proof of the joint, he gets off with a warning. Pissed off, he goes blowing off some steam to listening loud music and dancing. When he's danced all the anger out of him, Ariel appears. They talk about Bomont and rules. Ren decides to get a petition, in which he present the town council and asks for repeal of law against dancing. Some time Ariel breaks her relationship off with Chuck and he realizes there's been something going on with her and Ren. They get into a huge fight which ends with Chuck attacking Ariel physically. The meeting over allowing young people to dance in Bomont goes bad for Ren and he's willing to give the idea up, but an idea is brought to him, the whole school can have the prom dance in Bayson. Ren heads to church to get permission from Reverend Moore to take Ariel to prom. Father Moore talks about trust and trusting their children in the church where whole town is located, she gives permission to have a senior prom in Bayson warehouse. Kids and their parents start to decore the warehouse. Ren picks Ariel up with his old car, they head to the prom and seems to be having a good time until Chuck attacks Willard
and they get into a fight, beating each other up. Ren and Willard beat them up and go back to the party.

Chris finds Charlotte in the middle of the night on the stairs of the castle and brings her home. She keeps having dreams about a vampire, who keeps wanting to possess her. Charlotte confesses to her classmate, Nicole everything about the weird dreams, where she almost has an intercourse with handsome vampire. Nicole thinks she needs loosening up and takes her to a party. Finally Charlotte officially meets the vampire in the balcony, where party is located. She is charmed by him, yet doesn't understand why he has been haunting her. Charlotte is awakened from a kiss with unknown stranger by Nicole, who goes back to the party with her. The next night, Charlotte has a haunting dream
about Chris cheating on her with Marika, a beautiful woman. On the last day before a vampire falls into an eternal sleep, he uses the day to get Charlotte into her trap. Hoping to get a distraction from her dreams, Charlotte heads to the park, where she is photographed by Sarah. She takes her to her studio, where Charlotte is amazed by pictures she has taken. Charlotte opens up a bit, Sarah starts taking photographing her. Charlotte undresses her shirt and is comfortable with herself. She feels seduced by Sarah and they end up kissing. After it she is confused by her feelings and leaves the studio suddenly. She cancels her plans with Chris a day before her birthday and goes to classes next week, but the vampire keep showing up everywhere she goes. Charlotte attends another party, wearing dark make-up and different attitude, she smokes and drinks, Eliza puts a drug in her drink and soon she feels difference. She starts seeing all people at the party seducing and having intercourse with each other, Charlotte gets frightened and escapes from the party. She arrives at the dorm, lights a cigarette, Sarah enters their room and they share very passioned, private get-together until Charlotte bites her lip, then Sarah escapes. Milo appears out of nowhere, Charlotte tries to flirt with him, but caught by Eliza. The girls start fighting over Milo, Charlotte gives him up and offends Eliza. She slaps her, thought Charlotte keeps provoking her. Suddenly the vampire attacks Milo and Eliza and kills them both. When vampire's final hour has arrived, he invited Charlotte to be with her and she appears fast. Chris tries to save her from the hands of evil man, but is attacked. Charlotte comes back to her senses, wants Chris and vampire gives in. He vanishes into thin air and Charlotte wakes up, finding Chris oblivious. Charlotte lets him know it's the day of her birthday and they share a kiss.

Based on the name-named novel by Andrew Klavan. In 1991, a group of thieves steal a rare gem worth 10 million dollars, in the procedure, two men double cross their leader, Patrick and escape with the precious stone. Ten years later, Manhattan's child psychiatrist Dr. Nathan Conrad is invited
by his former colleague and friend, Dr. Louis Sachs to examine a disturbed young woman named Elisabeth Burrows. In the evening Patrick kidnaps Nathan's daughter, Jessie from his apartment where he lives with her and wife, Aggie. The next morning when Jessie is nowhere to be found, Nathan finds door chain cut off and the phone has no tone. Trying to get an ambulance through the phone, Nathan hears the voice of Jessie's abductor. Nathan realizes by the end of the phone call that Patrick doesn't any money he has, but something more valuable that Nathan has access to, 6-digit number that is hidden away in Elisabeth's memory. Nathan pays a visit to Elisabeth, who is distasteful at first, but changes her attitude when Nathan reveals her daughter had been kidnapped and he needs that number to get her back. Dr. Sachs confesses to Nathan that his girlfriend has been kidnapped by the same gang who took Jessie. Detective Sandra Cassidy pays a  visit to Sachs bringing bad news - his girlfriend has been found dead. Nathan is trying to use a fool proof tactic on Elisabeth trying to pull a trigger talking about her past, the reason why she is in mental asylum. His tactic backfires and Elisabeth kicks him out. Shortly after leaving he receives a call from Patrick, giving him clues to get closer to the number. Desperate
Nathan reads through Elisabeth case files and articles to get closer to saving Jessie. Louis Sachs gets pushed into the corner by Detective Cassidy, who suspects he is part of killing Sara or at least knows who did it. Nathan tries to get Elisabeth past guard to get her out of the hospital. When the guard doesn't let them out, Nathan attacks guard with syringe and they escape the ward together, only to get caught by Detective Cassidy. At the same time Aggie tries to make an escape after hearing Jessie singing and realizing she's nearby the apartment. The gang decides Aggie should be killed, but she decides to fight back with all strength she has. 43 minutes of left of the time when Nathan has to come forward with the number that saves Jessie. Aggie gets attacked by the black colored gang member, she kills him with the knife and is saved. Nathan takes Elisabeth to train station, where she remembers that her father was part of the gang and while her father left Elisabeth waiting, she sees how her father is killed by train. Revisited by horrible memories in his her past, Elisabeth remembers all they want is the doll of hers, which is located in Hart Island. Patrick calls Nathan, who makes a new demands of his own. Nathan and Elisabeth steal the boat to get on the island. As they get on the island, Patrick and his gang are already there, he attacks him. Nathan sees Jessie and sees she's alright. Elisabeth gives them a needed number as she remembers the doll, where the gem is hidden, is placed beside her father's coffin at Hart Island. They all find a number carved into the table, after that Patrick changes his mind and plans to kill Nathan. Patrick's partner gets shot, fired by Detectie Cassidy, who has arrived to the scene. Nathan buries Patrick alive and is reunited with Jesse.

Teresa 'Terri' Fletcher is a teenage girl living together with his mother Francis, father Simon and older brother Paul. Teresa has a passion for singing and hopes to become a professional singer some day. Teresa hopes to get into a music program that could give her 10 000 dollars scholarship. The only one who doesn't approve of her choice, is their father Simon, since he gave up a similar scholarship for running his parents restaurant. Terri gets along very good with her brother Paul, who fully supports her. At Paul's graduation barbecue, Terri and Paul sneak out to go to rock band Three Days Grace concert. On the way back home, they make a car accident, Terri wakes up at the hospital only to realize that Paul was killed in the accident. Teresa loses her passion for singing and music for that matter, she puts the music program out of her mind until Frances and aunt Nina make her realize the music program is the only way to make sure she sings in the future. They all convince Simon that Terri is going to live with Nina in Palm Desert for the summer, Simon accepts that and lets her go. Arriving to Los Angeles is kind of bumpy, when she arrives to music school, doors are already locked, luckily co-student Jay Corgan lets her in. Terri makes friends fast, at first with Jay and then Denise, her roommate. She's trying hard to fit in do good with classes, but the tragedy with Paul still haunts her. When Terri is messing up in the class of Mr. Torvald, he shows her a video that submitted with her application. Terri watches it, realizes video was filmed by
Paul and runs out in tears. Terri speaks from her heart about what happened back home Paul and how she keeps blaming herself for what happened, Jay comforts her and changes her mind about leaving the program. Terri stays and seems to be getting better, she and Jay get closer as they write music together, which makes Robin jealous, who had a a summer romance with Jay last year. Terri, Jay and Engelbert 'Kiwi' Wilson. Kiwi is fallen in love with a strange girl in school, Sloan and Terri arranged them a double date. Back at home Francis dicovers Simon has gone to Nina's place, in Palm Springs to check on Terri, Nina and Francis let Terri know and she does everything she can to make it to Nina's place before Simon realizes she is not there. Jay books them a gig in a pub, but Terri sees a stage light, is reminded to Paul's accident and runs out of stage. Mr. Torvald doesn't let Robin sing Terri's part when she hasn't come to class, she feels threatened by her and looks comfort in Jay's arms. Terri sees them and breaks it off with him. She uses Mr. Torvald's advice and tries to put her emotions to her music. Simon finds a letter in Francis's handbag and she finally confesses Terri is been the whole time at summer music program, not at Nina's. Simon shows up at the school right when Terri goes to her dorm to look for Paul's necklace. Simon has started packing her things and they get into arguement about music and Paul. Terri arrives to the stage in a last minute and gives emotional performance, she sings a song she wrote about remembering 
Paul. After the performance, Simon admits he was too hard on Terri.

Claire Peterson is middle-aged woman, who separates from her husband Garret after finding out he has been cheating on her with his secretary. Claire's best friend and her colleague, Vicky Lansing advices her to divorce Garrett, but she doesn't want to give up that easily. When the garage door is jammed, Claire and her teenage son Kevin meet with their neighbor, Bob's nephew Noah Sandborn, who has come to live with him to help him through the bone marrow transplant. Kevin and Noah
head up to the hardware store together and become good friends by time. Later Claire finds out Noah is going to the same school as Kevin and where Claire is a English literature teacher. Kevin leaves with Garrett to a fishing trip and Claire is left alone around the house. After a failed double-date arranged by Vicky for Claire, she heads home and enjoys a fine class of wine, but Noah gives her a call, concerned by failed dinner. Claire heads over to his place, they talk and drink
enough for her feeling wasted. Noah gives her compliments she hasn't been hearing from her husband for a while and though she feels it's wrong, Claire gives into temptation and sleeps with him. The next morning Claire wakes up at Noah's place, mortified and full of regret, Noah tries to offer her a breakfast, but she freaks out and tries to explain what happened between them, was a mistake and it was all her fault. Noah gets suddenl angry, punches a wall and Claire cleans his wound, leaving afterwards. Claire confronts Noah about sending transfer about him joining her class on her computer, but Noah leaves things unsettled. When it becomes clear to Noah that Claire doesn't want any kind of involvement with him, he tries to spend more and more time with Kevin and turns him against Garrett, it succeeds and Kevin picks a fight with his at the dinner table. Claire gets a bouquet of flowers and realizes they're from Noah, after making a deal of a  fresh start, Noah realizes Claire wasn't serious about this and gets expelled from school the same day after hurting badly one guy, who was picking on Kevin. At school dance party, Noah confronts Claire with provocative message on a bathroom wall, but she won't give in until the next day when arriving to her classroom in the morning, Claire discovers a thousand
pictures of her and Noah's night together. She tries to destroy all the pictures before her class comes in, but caught by Principal Ward Warren. Luckily she detached all the evidence, but Warren lets her know her behavior has been questionable lately in school. After Garrett and Kevin get into a small crash caused by non-working brake, Claire starts looking into Noah's past. Claire gets a strange voice mail from Vicky and rides to her ranch, outside the city to check the situation. She discovers a dead body of her friend, tries to call the ambulance, but Noah stops her. He takes her to the barn, where she finds Garrett and Kevin being hold by Noah. He thinks he's in control, but when Claire risks everything to save her husband and beloved son, she makes him beliee to trust him and when it's her chance, Claire destroys Noah and saves her family.

It's 1945, a young couple Ivor Hartley and Irene leave from the homecoming dance using a shortcut throught the woods.
On the way through the woods they start to make out, but it's obvious Irene isn't into it, she tries to pull Ivor off, but he won't stop. Ivor hits her and seems to be leaving. As Irene tries to find a way out of the woods, Benjamin Hartley hits her hard with rock and kills her. During growing up Benjamin has health issues and finally kills everyone, who tries to use the shortcut. Ivor and Benjamin's family keep him away from the rest of the world, keeping him in the basement, chain around the neck. Derek has recently moved with his family and little brother Tobey into a neighborhood, he becomes friends with Lisa, Mark and has a small crush on Christy. After a while Tobey comes home all bloody and freaked out, saying he used the shortcut and some old man scared him and probably killed a dog. Derek promises the check it out, but is called to practice. He talks to Mark, his new friend about the shortcut and he introduced him the legend of a crazy old man, scaring everyone off when dare to use the shortcut. Derek tries to get information out of his grandma about the shortcut, but grandmother turns cold and warns him to not go there ever. Derek's mother gives him a little insight about the legend - there was an incident when the kids in the old times took the shortcut and were never seen again, police even investigates, but were left with empty hands. Derek's mother doesn't believe the old man killed someone, but urges him to stay away from there and leave him be alone. Derek tells Taylor about the incident Tobey was in the woods
and Taylor confesses his dog has been missing and thinks the old man killed it. They go to the woods together to check the situation out. They're caught by old man and they make their best run through the woods. Derek and Lisa decide to
make an investigation on their own and start to stalking him, hoping old man won't see them. Derek wants to get to know Christy badly and invited her to spy on the old man. In the evening young people share themselves into two groups - Christy, Derek and Taylor, Mark, Lisa and start keeping an eye on old man. Taylor, Lisa and Mark make their way through the woods to the old man's house and look around there, hoping to find some evidence from the crimes. Christy and Derek guard the old man at the same as others are searching the house. They drink alcohol and get to know each other. Lisa sneaks into the house through a window, leaving Taylor and Mark outside. Most of the house looks normal until they head to the basement and find a guy, chain to his throat there. They free him from the chains and help him escape from the house.
The chain makes them stop, Taylor tries to break the chain with a big rock, Mark's hand gets injured by mistake with axe. The guy they freed is Benjamin and seeing Mark is injured, he uses the axe and kills Taylor and Mark, starting to chase Lisa. He makes the run for it, Derek and Christy try to ride as fast as they can to arrive around the house before the old man gets there. Lisa runs to the car, telling fast what happened, but old man has arrived, runs young people's car and they all escape from the car. The old man pulls out a gun, shoots them and Lisa gets injured. Derek help Lisa to walk when at the same time Benjamin hits Christy with a chain. Benjamin kills Christy with chain around her throat in front of Derek and Lisa's eyes. Turns out the old man is Ivor, Benjamin's brother, who confesses to Benjamin he can't kill for him anymore. Derek and Lisa make their way out of the woods and remain the only survivors.
