Lucy, Kit and Mimi are are childhood friends. They bury a box full of memories, making a pact and promise to dig up the box at high school graduation, the girls promise to be best friends forever, but life has other plans. Lucy has tried to be perfect at anything, Kit is a prom queen and Mimi has became an outcast, who got pregnant after one night stand. At the night if graduation, they all meet at their secret place and dig up the box. Girls visit good memories and start talking again. Mimi brings up the topic of taking a trip to Los Angeles, where she has an audition for record contract and invites Lucy and Kit to join her. Kit and Lucy are not thrilled about the idea, they start fighting again and everyone of them leave in different direction. The next early morning, Kit and Mimi are ready to take off with a guy Mimi knows, Ben, when Lucy appears. Kit plans to visit her boyfriend Dylan in Los Angeles and Lucy wants to visit her mother in Arizona. Everybody in the car are pissed off, but keep themselves calm and ride may begin. After spending night in some cheap motel, young people get on the road again. In the middle of the drive, car gets broken and Ben goes to get help from tow truck. Realizing fixing the car needs the money they know don't have, Lucy decides to call off the trip on her side and calls her father to come pick her up. Mimi brings out a brilliant idea on how to get the money for car fixing and they head to karaoke bar. Mimi will be the singer, Lucy and Kit are the back singers. When it turns out Mimi doesn't have such a great voice she thought she had, Lucy helps her out and does a song, which the whole bar likes and they get more money than they hoped for. Drinking and dancing after successful performance, a strange guy in the bar starts hitting on Lucy, though she doesn't like it. Ben sees it and saves Lucy from the creep, punching him in the face and they leave the bar. Girls decide to make a stop at gas station and buy food to mend their hangover, getting back to the car they see Ben has fallen asleep on the back seat. Not wanting wake him up since he hasn't gotten any sleep from night before, the girls decide to take his car keys and start driving. Hearing good song from the radio, the girls turn the volume up and start singing along, which wakes up Ben. Confused from waking up, he gets angry and makes them to stop the car. Ben leaves the car and storms around making a sand storm. Lucy goes to talk to him and tries to calm him down, promising they didn't mean any harm to his car. Ben explains why his car is so important to him. Lucy and Ben understands each other and Ben takes a wheel into his own hands again. Ben drops Lucy off at Tuscon to see her mother after she left her and her father when Lucy was only 3 years old. Ben drives off to a hotel with Kit and Mimi. Lucy's mother, Caroline is very suprised to see her. Lucy tries to make small talk, turns out Caroline remarried and has a new family with a husband and two sons. She finally confesses that Lucy wasn't a wanted child for her, Lucy feels hurt and shows up at the hotel where Ben, Kit and Mimi are staying in tears. Ben has a long talk with Lucy about visiting her mother and tries to comfort her. The next day when Mimi and Kit go to visit Dylan, Kit's boyfriend in Los Angeles, Ben and Lucy spend time together talking and making music together. Being together turns into intimate love making between them. At the same time, at Dylan's place, Kit realizes the night when Mimi was raped, it was her boyfriend Dylan. She punches him in the face and runs after Mimi, who falls down the stairs, ending up in the hospital, Mimi finds out she lost the baby. In the hospital Lucy calls her father and he shows up there, driving the girls back home. At the last moment, sitting in the taxi, Lucy makes up her mind and goes to audition instead of Mimi.
